Abstract

Immigration of Jews to the State of Israel (known as aliyah) is one of the components of migration movements to and from Israel. Aliyah is often considered a unique case of ethnic immigration that enters the homeland for the first time or returns to it. That is, a physical movement of people primarily identified with a given ethno-religious group (in this case, Jews and their families) to a place perceived as the historical, original and natural center (or the corestate) of that ethno-religious group. This article examines from a broad historical perspective the size of immigration to Israel within the framework of the Law of Return, the countries of origin of the immigrants and the main factors affecting their number and characteristics in thelast decades. Migration from the diaspora to the core country depends crucially on the socio-demographic characteristics of the diaspora. The issue is examined in this article in the global context and also in a more detailed context of the immigration from 16 selected countries of origin, including all the main Jewish communities in the world. We examine the accepted assumption that aliyah can be explained mainly by ethnic-religious and cultural factors related to the ideological pull of Israel and by push factors operating abroad, such as anti-Semitism in the countries of origin. On the other hand, the article examines socio-economic hold and push factors, including unemployment levels, in the countries of origin, and the parallel factors of pull and repel operating in Israel. The issue of non-Jewish immigrants within the Law of Return is also examined. This evaluation may contribute to an overall, conceptual and empirical view of a complex Israel migrations stem, and within the framework of global migration flows.
