N2 - Exegetes of Ex 14,20 have long had difficulty with the combination of cloud and darkness on the one hand, with light on the other, in the description of the Israelites' salvation in Ex 14,20. This study proposes a new interpretation of the phrase as referring to the emergence of lightning from the cloud, based upon biblical parallels (Job 36-37; Ps 77,19; 97,4), thus eliminating this tension. Cloud, darkness, and lightning are found together in biblical theophanies, and it is suggested that this is the Gattung of Ex 14,20.
