באמצע שנות התשעים החלו חוקרים לדווח על קשרים בין זיהום אוויר לבין תוצאי לידה בלתי רצויים. קשרים אלו מלמדים לא רק על מצב הפעוט אלא גם על בריאותו בעתיד. (מתוך המאמר).
