Abstract

This article examines two names unearthed in archaeological excavations: Yarbaal (Yerubaal), identified in an inscription dating to the late 12th century BCE, and Ashbaal (Ishbaal), found in an inscription from the early 10th century BCE. These names are significant within the biblical tradition, appearing in chronological order: Jerubbaal during the period of the Judges and Ishbaal at the outset of the royal period.
