Abstract
This article presents, for the first time, an annotated Hebrew translation of Moses Sperry Beach's series of articles from his 1867 visit to the Holy Land. These reports, written during the voyage for publication in the New York Sun, offer raw journalistic documentation of the journey, which became well known through Mark Twain's subsequent polished literary account in The Innocents Abroad. The reports reveal atension-filled encounter between the pilgrim's religious expectations and the realities of the land. As revealed by an accompanying scholarly article in this issue, Beach's articles serve as a valuable historical source for understanding prevailing attitudes toward the Holy Land in nineteenth-century American religious and popular culture.
