Abstract
This study focuses on how youth activists who are part of Fridays for Future Israel use social media for online activism around the climate crisis, and which media literacy skills they employ in the process. The study includes 25 semi-structured interviews with youth activists, age range 12–19. Our analysis of the interviews reveals that youth activists gain a set of social and technological skills through institutionalized peer-learning processes. These skills include socio-technological awareness regarding the potential power of activism in social media, creation and distribution, and reflection and ethical judgment. Youth activists relied on these skills at times of routine, and particularly in the circumstances surrounding the Israel-Hamas War. This study maps the skills necessary for young people for effective political expression on social media within the complex context of contemporary Israeli society.
