Abstract
ישראל ברטל טוען במאמרו שמעמדם של היהודים מאז אמצע המאה ה-16 במזרח אירופה השתנה בהתאם ליחסי הכוחות בין מנגנון המדינה הריכוזית, ששאף לשלב גם אותם כנתינים, לבין מגמות הבדלנות של הקבוצות האתניות השונות באימפריות הרב-לאומיות ששלטו באזור זה עד לתוך המאה ה-20.
