ההגדרה המופיעה בחוק השבות (תיקון מס' 2), תש"ל-1970, קוובעת כי "יהודי" הוא "מי שנולד לאם יהודיה או שנתגייר, והוא אינו בן דת אחרת". השאלות בהן דן המאמר הן: ראשית, האם הביטוי "נתגייר" כולל גם גיור שלא על-פי דין תורה; שנית, אם תמצא לומר כן, האם יוכר גם גיור שכזה שנערך בישראל גופה. (תקציר מתוך המאמר)
