Abstract
During the Byzantine period, a flourishing system of settlements was centred around six large ‘Negev Towns’ and smaller farmhouses and settlements. The economy was based onrunoff farming in small plots of vines, olives, cereals and legumes. This article presents theresults of a recent survey of Ḥorvat Saʻadon and the surrounding area, exploring the variouselements that make up its ancient settlement system and identifying a range of sites — from asingle farmhouse to hamlets and a village.
