Abstract
A mechanism for population inversion based on the dynamic displacement of the equilibrium position for internal motions is presented. The displacement is treated exactly using a van Vleck transformation while the remaining non-adiabatic terms are handled in low-order perturbation theory. Criteria for population inversion are established.
