Abstract
There is a veritable cottage industry of debates and discussions about the definitions of special operations forces (SOF). Some prefer formal, doctrinal definitions as a starting point for their analyses (Kadish et al. 2007; Last 2005a). Others focus on various categorizations centered on units labeled as ‘elite’, ‘special’, or ‘unconventional’ (to mention only a few) with criteria used for classification involving missions, training, or selection (Hellerman 2007; Horn 2004a, this volume; Jansen and Soeters this volume; Kiras 2010; Spulak 2007).
