Abstract

A correlated stereological and developmental analysis of the succulent tissue of Opuntia ficus-indica was carried out. The stereological parameters related to mucilage cells were described as a function of their distance from the apical meristem. Polynomes of the second and third degree were found to describe the developmental process. Three zones of development could be distinguished. The relation of the structure of the tissue to its physiological function and mucilage secretion is discussed.
