Abstract
An additional external wall layer composed of arrays of identical subunits and similar to that described in bacteria is shown to be present in four species of the cyanobacterium Microcystis. Thin sectioning, freeze-fracture, and negative staining show the same basic structure of the crystalline layer although lattice constants differ depending on the preparation method used.
