Abstract

The collision energy dependence of activated chemisorption is discussed via an optical model approach. The very rapid rise in the post threshold regime can be accounted for in terms of the decrease in the distance of closest approach. This dependence is contrasted with that for trapping without a barrier where the sticking probability decreases with increasing collision energy. The optical model is able to account for both types of behavior.
