Abstract
Americium perxenate has been prepared by precipitation from basic solutions of americium(III). The compound is orange and shows the characteristic absorption bands of Am(III) in the visible and near-infrared regions, as well as the characteristic infrared absorption at 650-680 cm−1 for the Xe-O vibration in perxenate. The compound is highly hydrated and has the stoichiometric composition Am4(XeO6)340H2O. Its solubility in water is 4.6 X 10−5 M. The compound dissolves in acid to form Am(VI) and Am(V).
