Abstract

A theoretical model based on the rate equations and energy transfer rates was developed to explain a threefold increase in the photoluminescence of a Eu(III)-pyridine complex in the presence of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). The model was modified and generalized to describe another two systems: i) copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) interacting with the Eu(III) complex, and ii) simultaneous interactions of CuNPs and CuONPs with the Eu(III) complex. Comparisons with experimental results suggest that the real system involved the effects of both copper and copper oxide nanoparticles on the luminescence of Eu(III).
