Abstract
Diphendialdehyde and 2, 2'-bis(cyanomethyl)bipheny 1 condense, in the presence of sodium ethoxide, to the tetrahydro derivative (IVa) of tetrabenzo [a, c, g, i] heptalene. 9, 10-Dicyanophenanthrene was a by-product of this reaction. From diphendialdehyde and 2, 2'-diaminobiphenyl, 9, 20-diazatetrabenzo[a, c, g, i]cyclododecene (XIV) was obtained.
