Abstract

A sample described as "masse de fer" (i.e. 'mass of iron') was excavated in Qumran by Roland de Vaux. Our analyzes cannot support the description as a "masse de fer". Rather we find that the sample consists mainly of quartz grains of uniform size with another small, unidentified crystalline component. In this paper we describe the situation of the find and report our analytical results, XRD, SEM-EDX and the determination of maximum firing temperature.
