Abstract

The anionic graft polymerization of ethylene oxide on the potassium alkoxide derivative of cellulose acetate was studied in solution in dimethylsulphoxide and in tetrahydrofuran. Graft polymers in high yield, free of homopolymers, were obtained. Their properties, such as solubility and composition, were determined. The polyethylene oxide content of the graft polymers, as well as the M̄n of the side chains, increased with increasing monomer concentration. The polymerization was faster in dimethylsulphoxide due to its larger dielectric constant and greater solvating power.
