Abstract

Mifepristone, the first antiprogesterone to be developed was discovered in 1981 and was originally called RU 38486. Unlike natural occurring hormones, mifepristone inhibits the effects of progesterone and cortisol, hence acting as a potent progestin and glucocorticoid antagonist. Mifepristone is a safe and effective drug for abortion and thus have a marked impact on maternal health throughout the world. However, abortion is not the only application of this new group of compounds, they can also be used to treat patients suffering from hormone dependent tumors, gynecological disorders and for contraception.
