Abstract

Following part I of this series, we have considered the process in which m simple solute molecules are brought from fixed positions at infinite separation from each other to a close packed configuration, where they are confined to a spherical region of a suitable diameter. This process is carried out at a fixed temperature and pressure, and within the solvent, the latter being a mixture of water and ethanol at various compositions. We have used a combination of theoretical (based on the scaled particle theory) and experimental information to compute the free energy, entropy, and enthalpy changes associated with this process. The results obtained by this procedure are all consistent with similar trends that have been obtained previously by a different method.
