Abstract

The role of autonomy is to ease tensions resulting from the heterogeneity of the population within a State, in particular ethnic diversity. Territorial political autonomy is compared to personal autonomy. Factors which may increase prospects for success are analyzed, as well as the pros and cons for autonomy.
