Abstract
The authenticity of -bšt as a theophoric element in the personal names Jerubbeshet, Ish-boshet und Mephiboshet is still a matter of debate. Scholars mostly consider it being the result of a pious or dysphemistic correction which changed the original ba'al »Baal« into bōšæt »shame«. The word bōšæt, however, may be explained as the Hebrew parallel to akk. bācombining dot belowštu »protective spirit« as well, as suggested by Tsevat and others. Against the common opinion, the second interpretation is confirmed by the transcriptions of the Septuagint. This strengthens the view that the divine epithet bōšæt has left its traces in a few other places of the Hebrew Bible as well (Hos 9,10; Jer 3,24 f.; I Reg 18,19.25).
