Abstract
In hypoid gear couples, such as those often used in axle transmissions of motor vehicles, in addition to the sliding motion in the tooth height direction, a sliding motion in the longitudinal direction occurs. As a result, the gear efficiency deteriorates with an increase in the axle displacement. With the aid of a newly developed testing apparatus a number of parameters affecting the efficiency were investigated. The results obtained concerning the lubrication mode, the immersion depth and the type of lubricants show that in the heavy-load range the efficiency is clearly affected by the lubricant. In the fast-running range it is mainly high immersion depths which lower the efficiency - mainly high immersion depths which lower the efficiency - especially when viscous lubricants are used.
