Abstract

Results on the investigation of anisotropy, birefringence and electro-optical modulation associated with intersubband transitions (ISBT) in multi-quantum well structures are summarized in this paper. The transitions are induced by IR light which is polarized along the growth direction. As a result, the induced ISBT susceptibility tensor becomes anisotropic and the crystal becomes birefringent. The birefringent effect was measured using a simple cross polarizer experimental setup. This effect was used for the design of an electro-optical modulator with built-in asymmetry in the structure. The electro-optical coefficient vs photon energy of the structure is presented.
