Abstract

This chapter explores two sets of issues related to the operation of a Japanese book company - which we call Yomitakunai - in Singapore. First, the case of this book company allows us to examine the “transplantation? of a retail business from Japan to this national context. This kind of analysis is important because it has been primarily production facilities and (more recently) financial services which have been systematically studied by social scientists (Hayashi 1986; Blumenthal 1987). Thus against the background of previous studies of what has been termed the “transferability? of Japanese organizational practices we can better see the distinctive characteristics of retail businesses.
