Abstract
Bromination of the aromatic ring of nonylphenol surfactants was carried out. The new molecules will have higher specific gravity, viscosity and refractive index. Surface and emulsifying properties of the brominated polyxyethylene nonylphenols were measured and compared to the non-brominated ones. The bromination increased their overall hydrophilicity and as a result higher HLB values were obtained for any of the surfactants. It should be noted that after bromination more stable emulsions were prepared and in some cases even better stabilities were measured.
