Abstract

Compromise constitutes a significant component in career decisions. In this article 3 facets of compromise are discussed: compromising between occupational alternatives, compromise in terms of the importance of the aspects relevant for the comparison between the alternatives, and compromise regarding preferences within each of these aspects. An integrative view that highlights the interdependence of these facets is presented, and the relationships between compromise and decision-making models, trade-offs, fuzziness, circumscription, and the influence of significant others are explored. Finally, some research implications of compromise are discussed.
