Abstract
Fusion of avian erythrocytes can be induced by Ca2+ at pH 10.5. The addition of 40 mM Ca2+ causes agglutination of the erythrocytes at pH 10.5 in the cold. Fusion occurs when the agglutinated cells are transferred to 37°. The mechanism of the process is discussed in relation to the virus-induced fusion of animal cells.
