Abstract

From the optical absorption spectrum of Ce3+ in borate and phosphate glasses, we calculate the nephelauxetic effect in the 4f-5d transition and the crystal field strength in these hosts. Some effects of covalency on the Ce3+-ligand bond are discussed and the bond-forming f-orbitals suggested.
