Abstract
No significant changes were noted in the total water content and extracellular fluid volume of the rat salivary gland. Plasma volume increased slightly during the first 10 exposure days; it then decreased and stabilized at a value lower than that in the control rats, and the extravascular space was, therefore, larger. Acini size increased gradually during the 3 weeks of exposure, but there was no change in the size of the ducts. The changes observed in the structure and distribution of fluid within compartments in the submaxillary salivary gland during heat exposure seem to be associated with the change in gland activity.
