Abstract
On the basis of an axisymmetric numerical hydrostatic model of a tropical cyclone, numerical experiments were carried out in which the release of latent heat of condensation is calculated explicitly on scales resolvable by a finite-difference grid with a horizontal spacing of 60 km. It is shown that a typhoon-like circulation structure can be obtained by a nonparametric description of convection even with such large grid spacings. The reasons for the lack of success in obtaining a hurricane structure in early subparametric models are discussed.
