Abstract
The dental profession is unique among the various types of health care providers since in most instances, only the dental practitioner is responsible for the diagnosis process, determination of treatment options, and performing the chosen treatment. Variations have been found among dental practitioners regarding diagnosis and treatment in the various fields of dentistry. This article reviews the educational factors influencing the clinical decision making and treatment planning in the dental practice. As a part of the first issue of the new International Journal of Clinical Dentistry, we believe that continuing education, exchange of opinions as well as clinical research in a multidisciplinary forum for publications from all fields of oral medicine is of utmost importance to bridge basic and clinical sciences, promoting the exchange of information and the advancement of oral medicine for the benefit of patients.
