Abstract

The cross section σCID for the collision-induced dissociation of a diatomic molecule (or ion) by atomic impact in the post-threshold energy region is found to be of the form σCID α(Etot-E0)5/2/Etr, where Etr is the initial relative translational energy, Etot the total (translational + internal) energy, and E0 the endoergicity (or threshold energy). The power 5/2 is a direct consequence of the 3-body final state of the CID process.
