Abstract

The author examines the pivotal arguments which have recently been raised in post-Zionist research studies, dealing with early Jewish settlement in Palestine/Israel: according to these studies, this enterprise should be discussed in terms of the colonial model, and should therefore be characterized as any other European colonialist settlement worldwide. Both the above hypothesis and conclusion are rejected. The author proposes a theoretical basis, differentiating between colonialism and colonization, and defining three basic categories of colonial realisations which can be discerned with the help of this distinction. The author analyzes some principal characteristics of the late 19th century Palestinian case study, in comparison with other cases of foreign settlement. All of this leads to the conclusion that early Jewish settlement can only fall under the category of 'colonization without colonialism'.
