Abstract

We consider quantum-electrodynamics and gravity in one dimension as systems with perturbatively a negative number of degrees of freedom. We find that indeed these pure systems are over-constrained and exist only as topological theories. In the presence of matter a degree of freedom is removed from the system and only special momenta are allowed. In some cases the cosmological constant gets quantized. We consider also two-dimensional gravity with a cosmological constant and suggest that this system is over-constrained as well.
