Abstract
Protection, against unemployment through ‘national insurance’ ignores differences in the risk of unemployment and imposes a higher cost on the worse‐off. Professor Michael Beenstock, of the City University Business School, proposes the radical innovation of unemployment insurance supplied by the market to loosen rigidities in the supply of labour, discipline trigger‐happy employers, and reduce the burden of taxation.
