Abstract
Mechanically stable solid sponges can be produced by freeze drying 2 % agar and 1 % alginate gels. The sponges have characteristic compressive stress‐strain curves that can be described by a three‐parameter model originally developed for polymeric sponges and bakery products. Internally produced bubbles, formed by immersing bicarbonate‐containing gels in an acid bath, resulted in a considerable loss of mechanial integrity in the dry agar sponges but not in those of the alginate.
