Abstract
A general solution to the time-dependent equation for an unstirred batch system with a plane infinite membrane containing dissolved solids is presented for the case pi //0 less than less than DELTA P. This solution reduces, at the membrane-solution interface, to that originally derived by Dresner et al. An infinite time and salt rejection R less than 1, the polarization parameter psi is related to the distance parameter xi . Using a high pressure test cell with windows, laser interference patterns in the solution adjacent to the membrane were photographed at various time intervals for 10 atm. applied pressure at 20 degree C. Values obtained for R and the permeation flux V//w//0 by the optical method and the above theory compare favorably with independently measured values.
