Abstract
THE GROWING RATE OF WATER POLLUTION AND THE NEED FOR UTILIZATION OF WATER FROM SO CALLED MARGINAL RESOURCES RESULT IN A NECESSITY FOR HIGH-RATE PURIFICATION SYSTEMS THAT ARE ABLE TO TREAT DILUTE SUSPENSIONS EFFICIENTLY.THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE A HIGH-RATE PROCESS WHICH CAN BE REFERRED TO AS 'CONTACT FLOCCULATION - FILTRATION' OR SIMPLY CONTACT FILTRATION.THIS IS A HIGH-RATE FILTRATION THROUGH A GRANULAR BED, WITH THE AID OF A FLOCCULANT INJECTED INTO THE LIQUID BEFORE IT REACHES THE BED.DILUTE SUSPENSIONS CAN BE PURIFIED IN THIS WAY WITHOUT THE NEED FOR INTERMEDIATE STEPS SUCH AS THE CONVENTIONAL FLOCCULATION AND SEDIMENTATION.(FROM PAPER)
