Abstract
Translated from Zh. Tekh. Fiz.; 43: 855-860(Apr 1973). A simplified ; analytic model of an arc is used to show that the discharge in a thermionic ; converter must contract into a filament at the transition from the arc mode to ; the diffusion mode, in agreement with experiment. The contraction occurs at a ; low neutraIization parameter, at which the voltage-current characteristics ; calculated for a transversely homogeneous plasma display an unstable negative-; resistance region.
