Abstract
This chapter analyzes the different historical circumstances that led to the arrival of the first 'New Christians' of Jewish origin to Hispanic America during the colonial era. We will also examine the main characteristics of this group as well as their impact within colonial society. As the documents of the Inquisition constitute the main source for the study of this phenomenon, we will carry out a general assessment of these documents and try to point out some of the peculiarities of the converso phenomenon in each of its geographical enclaves.
