N2 - Distribution data of organic solutes (species 2) between water and water-saturated tri-n-butyl phosphate as well as six water-saturated alkanols (species 1) have been correlated with properties of the solutes and the o solvents. The expression log Kw = Av' + Aβ' βmz is X2 statistically adequate, and only a small improvement is achieved if the term A α'.α mz is added. The coefficients αm2A ', Aβand A ' ‘ are then related to the relevant V β α properties of the water-saturated solvents relative to water: AδHi2, Aα 1, and Aβ, respectively. The for essentially ‘dry’ solvents are used to predict the distribution ratios of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids between solvents of these categories and water, in agreement with experimental results. The supposition that the ‘wet’ solvents are microheterogeneous to a large extent helps to explain the different coefficients with respect to hydrogen bonding that have to be used for them and for essentially ‘dry’ solvents.
