N2 - In the published version of this article, in the section ‘Minute 10, Phenotypic testing of strains of Halobacteria’ reference was made to comments sent by B. J. Tindall in an e-mail sent to the members of the subcommittees: ‘B. J. Tindall also commented that he had noted that over the years chemotaxonomic data have been published on members of the class Halobacteria that do not bear up to closer scrutiny. This phenomenon also applies to some of the data published on members of the family Halomonadaceae.’ The original text included in the e-mail that is formally corrected here read: ‘B. J. Tindall also commented that he also noted over the years some confusion being caused by data that is in circulation on members of the class Halobacteria that does not bear up to closer scrutiny. This phenomenon also applies to some of the data published on members of the family Halomonadaceae.’ The authors apologise for any inconvenience caused.
