Crack front waves and the dynamics of a rapidly moving crack

Abstract

A study was carried out to demonstrate that localized waves, "front waves," (FWs) generated by an asperity, fundamentally affect a crack's dynamics. It was shown that FWs both transport energy along the crack front and locally impart inertia to the initially "massless" crack.
