Abstract

In the series NbxCr1-xO2, ten different compositions in the range 0.5≤x≤1.0 were prepared. Single crystals were grown from the appropriate stoichiometric mixtures by chemical transport in closed ampoules, using a mixture of NbCl5 and Cl2 as the transporting agents. X-ray powder diffraction data showed the material to have the rutile tetragonal structure (R) for 0.5≤x< 0.92 and the low temperature NbO2 superstructure (LT) for x≥0.92. The phase transition was studied by DTA.
