Abstract

We report the first observation of the stress induced phase transition from cubic to trigonal symmetry in SrTiO3 at temperatures greater than 106°K, by means of Raman scattering from soft modes. Our results are in qualitative agreement with those which follow from the theory of Slonczewski.
