Abstract
The operation of a CW CO2 laser pumped by vibrationally excited nitrogen generated by the reaction of nitric oxide with atomic nitrogen is reported. 15-mW output power at an overall chemical efficiency of 1 percent has been obtained. The population inversion density of the system has been determined from gain measurements.
