Abstract

Each of Giorgio de Chirico’s paintings presents an undeciphered enigma, a mystery that the abundant literature devoted to his art fails to illuminate adequately. The two essays that follow propose a new, psychoanalytically oriented framework interwoven with an art historical approach for interpreting a number of the major pictures that de Chirico painted during the flowring of his metaphysical phase, between 1911 and 1919.
