Abstract
A decent society requires the elimination of the sort of inequality that leads to humiliation, as well as humiliating coercion. I claim that the humiliation involved in inequality and coercion depends in part on the communicative and symbolic character of the acts of inequality or coercion. I emphasized one particular component of such acts, namely, the aspect of untouchability or pollution associated with inequality.
